The proposed Advance Ship Notice schema has a four-tier structure: shipment, order, pack, and item. Each tier contains a number of elements appropriate to that tier. For example, the shipment level contains shipment method and ship-to party identification; the order level contains the order number and physical details about the order (weight, volume, etc.); the pack level contains pack serial number, units, and dimensions; the item level contains product identification and item reference numbers. (These examples are only a small number of all the elements supported.) The number of mandatory elements has intentionally been kept small to make using the schema easy for all parties irrespective of the back-end system generating or receiving the ship notice. The only mandatory levels are shipment and order, and of those, the shipment level has only three mandatory elements (ship date, ship-to information, and transaction date), while the order level has only one mandatory element (order number).
